Prevention of Small Business Fraud

Objectives:

1. Understanding the thoughts and feelings of a fraudster can provide valuable insight to enhance an organization's anti-fraud efforts.

2. Knowing why a fraudster commits his or her crime can help us learn how to prevent fraud by addressing the circumstances that lead to it.

3. Gaining insight into the way a perpetrator rationalizes his or her actions can also give us ideas about how to prevent such rationalizations in the future.

I. The Fraud Triangle-Donald Cressey

  • Pressure, Perceived Opportunity and Rationalization

II. The Ten Critical Thinking Errors of Unethical Behavior

  • This section of the workshop will include various examples related to the ten critical thinking errors

  • A video that discusses the ten thinking errors in depth and shows how these errors manifested in the lives of several convicted fraud perpetrators

III. Why Did They Do It?

  • People commit fraud for many reasons, some obvious and others not. Most researchers and psychologists believe that the decision to commit fraud is typically based on a combination of predisposition and personal circumstances.
