Artists learn art of doing business at University of Nevada seminar

Libby Platus

A "starving artist" need not starve forever. Working artists, designers and crafters can learn how to develop an entrepreneurial approach to their craft through a workshop co-sponsored by the Nevada Small Business Development Center at the University of Nevada, Reno and the Nevada Museum of Art.

Libby Platus, a self-described "Johanna Appleseed" of arts information, is a nationally recognized art consultant who will conduct the workshop. Platus has led more than 800 seminars worldwide, offering artists access to information and strategies for enhancing careers and visibility.

"Most artists want to do their work and ignore the business side of art," Platus said. "But no matter how artistic and creative the person, they need to know how to sell themselves and their work for financial survival.

"I teach them that financial freedom is possible and that getting there can be interesting and satisfying."

What: "The Business of Art: Success is an Inside Job" seminar.

When: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19.

Where: KNPB-TV Channel 5 Community Room, 1670 N. Virginia St.

Cost: $59, lunch included.

Reservations: Call (775) 784-1717.

"Her familiarity with artists and her knowledge of their business warrants the artist to invest in what she has to say," said Kathy Carrico, state training director for the NSBDC. "Many artists don't see themselves as entrepreneurs. Ms. Platus will emphasize that approach and teach attendees to take charge of their career."

"Business skills are an integral part of the art market," said Steven High, executive director of the Nevada Museum of Art. "The NMA is pleased to help offer valuable business training to the artists and craftspeople of our community."

Workshop topics include goal setting, image, attitude, identifying customers and sales outlets, developing promotional materials, marketing strategies and publicity. Platus encourages artists to bring examples of their work to discuss pricing.

There is limited seating and reservations are required. Call (775) 784-1717 to register.
